With this in mind; and the BSL Act being passed in 2022, Nancy set about trying to bridge the gap between the deaf and the hearing world.
Everything to do with the D/deaf world is naturally more authentic when delivered by a deaf person with lived experience. Nancy has teamed up with her deaf friends and professionals to capture their lived experiences. Together, they have written a deaf awareness workshop for business.
Written and celebrated in partnership with D/deaf friends and professionals.
This fun, interactive, informative hour is written in partnership with D/deaf professionals. It gets wonderful feedback and promotes your equality, diversity, inclusion and belonging commitments.
This workshop can be delivered face to face, online or hybrid style.
The aims of the deaf awareness workshop are to;
– Remove barriers to communication
– Have a better understanding of the deaf world, deaf people and their preferred communication
– Understand your responsibilities with the BSL Act 2002
– Learn the BSL alphabet and have some fun using it!
Although hearing loss affects 1 in 3 adults, there is still a lack of deaf awareness and confidence in basic communication;
68% agreed that they felt isolated at work because of their hearing loss.

It was very interesting and thought-provoking and clear that we all really enjoyed it.
Nancy pitched it at just the right level, to ensure we all got a flavour of the communication issues that affect people with a hearing difficulty. Just as importantly, we learned some relatively simple measures to improve people’s experience, by helping them to communicate and to feel welcome and valued.

I wanted to thank you for the excellent workshop you led on Deaf Awareness at the Syneos building in the Farnborough Business Park. It was thoroughly engaging and a useful insight into the stats, legislation and how we can all play an integral part in supporting this.

Thank you to Women in Data for asking me to be part of Deaf Awareness Week with the awesome Nancy Weatherson from FeelHear. It was amazing to see so many people engage and learn about some simple things we can all do to make things a bit easier for our deaf friends.

I really enjoyed working with Nancy when she delivered training to RBC on Deaf Awareness and an introduction to sign language (both BSL and ASL). She was professional throughout and was great fun to work with. We’re a worldwide bank and Nancy was very accommodating for different time zones and sign language alphabets. The session was engaging, informative and really enjoyable. Thanks Nancy, you’ve given us a better understanding of the deaf community and their needs and we are all enjoying practicing our new sign language skills.

A quick note to extend my huge, huge, thanks to you for coming to Broadsword’s Access and Inclusion day on Thursday. Your personality, knowledge and skills were invaluable and added so much to the day.

I got the chance to attend the deaf awareness session conducted in Fluor yesterday. First of all I would like to thank you for your enormous efforts in raising deaf awareness. You have clearly demonstrated how difficult it can be being deaf in a hearing world. We can do so much more to make them more comfortable and included. You were so impressive in explaining a totally new subject to me in such a limited time frame.
Where can I learn more please?
FLUOR
I am totally indebted to you for making the day such a success.

Just Brilliant – we’re having such fun using our new skills in the shop with each other. I can’t wait for a D/deaf or hard of hearing customer to come in.

We can be so much more effective with a little awareness. That was brilliant – I want to learn more!

BSL was an enigma to me until this training and Nancy’s methodology resulted in me being able to understand the alphabet which, when incorporated with lip reading, enabled me to interpret a deaf person’s full menu order. All in 45 mins ! Nancy delivered an excellent session which was both educational and enlightening.
Great event which all should attend if ever repeated.
RBC
As a hearing impaired person who lip reads in conjunction with hearing (I can’t generally do either in isolation) I really struggle in group situations to follow conversations and team meetings can be especially challenging. I miss out on so much but have just got used to it over the years. Good to see things could be changing as awareness improves.

I am so pleased that I attended as it was absolutely brilliant. I learnt so much in the one hour session and have been practicing since and talking to people outside of work about it! It really did give me the feel-good factor and made a nice refreshing change to BAU on a subject that is so important. Well done and a big thank you to Nancy. Now back to the practicing…
RBC
Thank you so much for arranging the training and for sharing the materials, I found the training excellent and the materials you shared will be useful to keep, it is definitely something I want to learn more about. I would definitely recommend my team and others to book onto this training, it was extremely useful.
RBC
Thank you again for the great session you delivered-it was very enjoyable and informative.
